After the ceasefire ended, cyberattack hits air alarm applications in Ukraine and Russia

Applications for warning air strikes in Ukraine and Russia have been targeted by cyber attacks overnight, just when the temporary ceasefire between the two countries was over.

Ukraine’s Air Force first announced through a message on Telegram that the Air Alert app could have been attacked, urging citizens to remain calm and follow official reports. She also explained that there was no radioactive threat.

Later, the app technical team confirmed the intervention, suggesting that unauthorized persons had influenced its operation. For security reasons, vacation reports were temporarily deactivated and the service was suspended.

The platform supervisors assured users that their personal data has not been jeopardised because the app does not store such information. At the same time, citizens were warned not to open suspicious ties that may be included in reports.

A similar incident was reported in Moscow, where the objective of a cyberattack was the Russian Ministry’s mobile app for Emergency Situations. According to agency RIA Novosti, after the attack, citizens began accepting e-mails with false information.

The attacks occurred after the end, on November 1st, of the temporary ceasefire in the Kherson region, which had entered into force on October 27th. Kiev announced that Russia had rejected the proposal for extending the agreement.

The pause in combat had enabled the development of a humanitarian mission in the Russian – controlled town of Olesky. Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets described the ceasefire as an important step towards humanitarian efforts.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Centre for Strategic Communication, SPRAVDI, attributed the attack on the Ukrainian app to Russia, while Moscow has not disclosed who it holds responsible for the attack on its platform.

In other developments, talks between Moscow and Kiev are expected to resume this month, with the United States’ mediation, following a long period of stalled negotiations.

Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, has declared Ukraine could stop attacks on Russian oil refinerys if the United States supplies it with Patriot interceptive missiles, as Kiev requires.

Cyberattacks indicate that the impact between the two countries is continuing in digital space, despite temporary testing in combat.
