New power in Belgrade, without signs of change in attitude towards Kosovo

Students managed to change power in Serbia after 14 years. But will Belgrade’s policy towards Kosovo also change? The positions of the Student List do not warn any substantial twist.

In its programme, the Kosovo issue is addressed in line with the UN Constitution and Resolution 1244, with emphasis on improving the position of Serbs in Kosovo.

Ilija Srdanovic, the first on the Student List, has warned of continuing dialogue with Pristina and implementation of the Brussels Agreement, but in line with Serbia’s Constitution. At the National Convention for the European Union, no quick changes in dialogue are expected.

I don’t believe that after the constitution and formation of the Government there will be a very different dynamic. I think these processes, especially when we talk about dialogue, have reached a stage where they will continue to remain in the current situation, while attention will focus on other issues, Bojana Selakovic of the National Convention on the European Union has said.

Even in the European Movement in Serbia, they estimate that power change does not guarantee policy change to Kosovo, but can create space for another approach.

When it comes to relations between Belgrade and Pristina, it should not be expected that the election outcome, in itself, will bring a substantial twist. However, I hope that power change will create the possibility that relations will be built through a responsible dialogue, respect for the obligations taken, and give up the policy of continuing confrontations, Dragana Djurica of the European Movement in Serbia has said.

The European Union has recalled that changing power in Serbia does not change the obligations made in the dialogue, including the Brussels and the Ohrid Annex Agreement. After winning the Student List, it remains to be seen whether the new government in Belgrade will bring concrete changes to dialogue with Kosovo or continue policy thus far. / RTK
