The strike of technical workers, who have been unable to maintain and clean schools in Pristina, has caused parents in several schools in the capital to boycott learning. The chairman of Kosovo’s Independent Private Sector Union, Yusuf Azemi, has said the strike will continue until all workers’ demands are met. Meanwhile, the Pristina municipality has announced that an agreement has been reached on the issue and that workers are expected to resume work over the next week.

Friday was not a typical class day for students in some schools in the capital. Lack of basic hygiene conditions has led school students’ parents to decide to keep their children at home, boycotting the lesson because of concerns about their safety and health.

The Albanian post Kelmendi-Rama, at the same time a member of the Parents’ Council, has said the boycott decision has been taken after opportunities for co-operation and communication have been exhausted.

This decision did not come about by chance. We’ve tried all possible options of cooperation and communication, but this is the situation we’ve come to. Obviously, under such conditions learning cannot be developed is alarming. We decided only today to boycott the lesson, she said.

The Education Directorate has announced that they are verifying whether the study boycott is being organised deliberately by schools themselves.

In addition to lack of hygiene, some schools in Pristina are facing a lack of heat. For this reason, the Council of Parents at the school Mehmet Zvi forefathers has also decided to boycott the lesson, raising concerns about lack of cleaning and heating.

As for the heating problem, Elshani has said that difficulties in some schools relate to unfinished works under the project for installing new heating systems and increasing energy efficiency.

According to him, the project has remained in half, as the Finance Ministry has blocked the budget code for payment realisation.
