The chief state prosecutor has taken action to review the institutional treatment of cases reported by Arlinda Zeqaj, who was killed on October 25th in Pec.
Through an official report, the State Chief Prosecutor’s Office has revealed that the national co-ordinator for domestic violence cases has been authorized to analyze all actions taken in handling cases where the deceased victim was.
Also, a detailed written report on the chronology of the treatment of cases of Arlinda Zekitaj has been requested by Pja Chief Prosecutor Joy Vucetaj.
The report should include the identity of reported persons, the legal selection of cases, the prosecutors who have handled them, the procedures taken, and the timing when the decisions are taken, as well as the relevant decisions and reasoning.
Also required is clarification on risk assessment and measures undertaken or required for the victim’s protection, communication with the Kosovo Police and other institutions, as well as the handling of Arlinda Zekaj’s letter of October 22nd 2026.
Within these actions, the Kosovo Police Inspectorate has also been instructed to take relevant investigative and verifiating actions concerning all cases reported by the late in the police.
According to the announcement, the review will include the manner of accession, identity, assessment and treatment of its reporting, as well as actions undertaken by police officials, with the aim of assessing legitimacy and identifying individual and institutional eventual responsibilities.
The State Chief Prosecutor’s Office has stressed that the issue will be addressed with the necessary seriousness and urgency, while after accepting and analyzing the documentation, necessary legal and institutional actions will be undertaken.
The report reportedly said that if violations of the law, neglect or inaction were found by responsible officials, relevant legal measures would be taken and responsibility would be required for any recorded violations.
Arlinda Zekaj was killed on the 25 October night of Vitomirica in Pec. As the Signal newspaper reported, the suspect in the murder is her brother-in-law, Albert Sylaj, who allegedly hit her with an axe.
The signal reported earlier that Arlinda had denounced domestic violence and had returned home accompanied by a police patrol just minutes before being found without signs of life.
