Two protests are under way in the Albanian capital — one organised by students, professors and young people before the Ministry of Education — while the other called by the Democratic Party before the prime minister.

The student protest has been held for 19 days, while the Democratic Party has organised its second national gathering, expressing support for students’ demands.

However, efforts to bring two protests together have been accompanied by tensions, as students have not allowed Democratic Party protesters to join their rally.

During the afternoon, the situation before the Ministry of Education has escalated. According to Albanian media reports, some masked protesters have thrown Molotovs, stones and other means towards police. In the past, trash cans and cartons have been burned, while capsolas have been dumped and mortars used against law forces.

Police have intervened with water pressure to disperse protesters and prevent further escalation of the situation.

After the intervention of police and rainfall, part of the protesters have left the area before the Ministry of Education, in the direction of the Nation’s Witnesses.

Meanwhile, Democratic Party deputy Luciano Boci has declared that protesters should focus on the common political goal. He has said the DP solidifies with students and that the aim of the opposition protest is to oust Prime Minister Edi Rama and establish a technical government.

On Saturday, Democratic Party protesters have gathered in front of the prime minister, while students have continued their protest before the Ministry of Education.
