Students list prepares for power, Vuciq challenges new government

The 11-point programme envisions measures against corruption, justice reform and media freedoms. Vucic warns of a government-Serbian, while the EU calls for peaceful reform and transition of power.

After winning early parliamentary elections in Serbia, the Students List is preparing to start talks on forming the new government, while the name candidate for prime minister has not yet been formalised.

The movement has published an 11-point programme, with much of the measures aimed at fighting corruption. Among other promises are reforms in the judicial system, guaranteeing media freedom, providing affordable housing and improving access to health services.

One of the pledges of the programme is the slogan ʹchdo village will have a doctor with whom the movement aims to highlight the importance of health services for citizens throughout the country.

After the election victory, however, the question of how the Students’ List will organise and manage governance remains open. Unlike traditional political parties, the movement does not have a clear hierarchy or a single leader, which raises questions about how decisions will be made and responsibilities in the future government will be shared.

Among the names that are being mentioned for the prime minister’s post are Ilija Srdanovic, cardiologist from Novi Sad and student List bearer, as well as Dejan ãoškiić, former governor of the National Bank of Serbia.

So far, it has not been disclosed which one can receive the mandate for forming the government. Candidate appointment and the composition of the new cabinet are expected to be among the main issues of political talks after the elections.

Meanwhile, Aleksandar Vuciq has criticised the political direction that, according to him, will take the country under the new government.

In his first interview after losing in Sunday’s election, given to cable television Informer, who openly supported him during the campaign, Vucic declared that “no longer speaks of patriotism, nor of patriotic zeal.

He claimed the new government would pursue policies he considers against Serbia’s national interests.

All the naive people carrying the flags of non-government and talking about great national dreams will soon realize that we were right and that this is a government for naked anti-Serb words that will not only admit that we are a genocide people, but will also impose sanctions on Russia, Vucinac said.

He added that many of the citizens who voted for the Student List would regret their choice after five or six months.

They were led by hatred, they wanted to fight against someone at any cost, not someone, he said.

Vuciq also stated that the Serbian Progressive Party is going through a period he described as revolutionary terrorism, warning that its supporters will be self-organised.

Meanwhile, some citizens continue protests against the media, which they see as supporting former powers.

EU urges reform, peaceful transition

On the other hand, European Council President Antonio Costa has voiced support for Serbia’s European road during a telephone conversation with Ilija Srdanovqi, the head of the Students’ List.

Serbia’s country is in the European Union, Costa said.

We are willing to support its European path, he added.

Costa stressed the importance of reforms in the area of rule of law, the fight against corruption and media freedom. He also called for the quick constitutionalisation of parliament and formation of a new government, demanding peaceful transition and respect for election results.

For his part, Srdanovqi said Serbia will continue the process of European integration.

Serbia is negotiating membership in the European Union since 2014, but since December 2021 no new group of negotiators has opened. Further progress in this process will also depend on progress in institutional reforms, rule of law and meeting membership criteria.
