Barcelona has been fined 602 euros by Spain’s Football Federation, following the appeal of Atletico Madrid, who accused the Catalonas club of contacting silversmith Julian Alvarez without publicly announcing his club.
Sanction was pronounced Tuesday, according to Article 133 of the federation’s regulation. Atletico Madrid has also turned to FIFA on the issue, but the world’s top football institution has estimated that there is no jurisdiction to handle the case.
Alvarez, who has contracts with Atletico Madrid until June 2030, has been involved in controversy over recent months after expressing a desire to transfer to Barcelona.
In an interview during the 2026 World Cup, the assailant had declared that he wanted to make up his dream of playing the Catalona club. This statement had caused disappointment in Atletico Madrid’s fans and had triggered a collision that continued during the passing summer deadline.
Alvarez has been whistled several times by local fans this season, but the reports between him and part of them seem to be improving.
The Argentine striker scored the winning goal for Atletico Madrid in the match against Deportivo La Corunas on Saturday, implementing the second consecutive match. After the goal, parts of fans at the Metropolitan Stadium applauded.
After the match, Alvarez apologized for his statements, acknowledging that he was wrong.
It was wrong. I understand why fans are angry. If I was a fan, I would be angry, especially considering how they supported me since I came, the Argentinian said.
The victory over Deportivo La Corunas has drawn Atletico Madrid to only two points from Barcelona, which leads the La League.
