Deputy Prime Minister and Acting Minister of Justice, Donika Gërvalla , participated today in the conference “Together for Recognition and Support”, organized in the framework of marking June 19 – the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence as a Weapon of War.
In her speech, Gërvalla said that this day serves to honor all those who experienced sexual violence during the war in Kosovo and to reaffirm the institutional commitment to justice.
She emphasized that sexual violence during the war was not an accidental consequence of the conflict, but a crime planned and used as a tool of war.
“Sexual violence was not an incidental part or an accidental result of war. It was used as a weapon of war. It was used to humiliate, to intimidate and to leave deep wounds, which continue to be felt today,” Gervalla declared.
Speaking about survivors of sexual violence during the war, she praised their courage in breaking the silence and seeking justice.
“For many years, silence weighed heavily on these crimes. Therefore, today we honor not only the suffering of the survivors, but above all their courage to speak out, to testify and to seek justice,” the minister said.
Gërvalla expressed gratitude to civil society organizations, activists and professionals who have contributed to supporting survivors, highlighting the role of former President Atifete Jahjaga in raising public awareness on this issue.
She said that Kosovo institutions have taken concrete steps to document, investigate and prosecute war crimes, citing the strengthening of institutional capacities, the creation of mechanisms for the recognition and support of survivors, as well as the enabling of trials in absentia for war crimes.
“Because the lack of cooperation from Serbia should not become a permanent obstacle to our pursuit of justice,” she said.
Finally, Gërvalla reiterated that justice for survivors remains a daily obligation of institutions and that the perpetrators of these crimes must face justice.
“You are not alone. We will not forget and we will not remain silent. We will not stop demanding true justice, institutional justice and accountability for all war crimes. Your courage is part of history, our freedom and the strength of the Republic of Kosovo,” concluded Gërvalla. / Telegraph /
