The use of Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro is growing in Switzerland, while the debate over their costs has also gone to politics.

Weight – loss injections are increasingly being sought in Switzerland, not only by obesity patients but also by those who use them for lifestyle reasons.

Health insurance covers these treatments for patients with body mass index ( BMI) 35 or more, while in cases of BMI 28 or more coverage, there are other health problems, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, reports SRF.

Swiss People’s Party ( SVP) requires stricter criteria for repaying these drugs. National adviser Mike Egger argues they are being described very easily and that other measures must be proven before costs are covered by health insurance.

And the health care organization, Prio. Swiss, requires that drugs be used carefully, but supports their coverage from basic security when conditions for efficiency, adaptation and cost-effectiveness are met, transmiting Telegrafi.

According to health economist Simon Wieser, however, the cost of injections should not be seen cut off from the economic burden of obesity. In 2022, obesity – related diseases cost the Swiss health system about 3.7 billion francs, while productivity – related losses reached about 2.9 billion francs.

Wiezer argues that treatment can bring long-term benefits if it prevents other diseases and improves the quality of life.

Meanwhile, family doctor Jawad Jalal objects to the claim that these drugs are being described inexorably. According to him, there are clear rules to determine patients who have the right to benefit from the repayment.
