Nine people lost their lives after a private Learjet plane crashed and broke out in flames Sunday afternoon in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States.
The accident occurred near the Cresthaven area, about 14km from Mar-a-Lago, the American President Donald Trump’s resort.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration ( FAA), the plane was launched from Austin, Texas, and had a destination of the Bahamas.
So far, authorities have not disclosed the identity of nine people on board, while it remains unclear how many of them were passengers and how many crew members.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the crash moment as saying: It looked like a falling missile.
Meanwhile, flight records and reports of American media show that the aircraft had lost altitude at extraordinary speeds, dropping hundreds of meters per second before the crash.
In an audio published by communication with air traffic control, the pilot is heard reporting first that the plane was dropping at 10,000 feet per minute.
Moments later, he declared a state of emergency, warning of an even faster descent.
We’re in a state of excessive speed going down at 20,000 feet a minute. We’re going down… We’re out of time, the pilot says.
This accident ranks second in the United States this year, according to data from the National Transport Safety Board ( NTSB).
The deadliest accident was the collapse of a parachutist plane in Butler, Missouri, in June, where 12 people died.
