Rama: Serbia remains closed to Kosovo recognition

Referring to the result of parliamentary elections held in Serbia on 25 October 2026, where according to the statement presented the Student List was victorious, Rama said that political change in Belgrade is not expected to bring a new approach to the Kosovo issue. The head of the Albanian government stressed that recognition of Kosovo remains one of the most important issues for Albania, but, according to him, election winners in Serbia have not indicated openings on the issue.

What she knows, is that winners in Belgrade do not show openings to what is the most loving issue for me and the Albanians, which is the issue of recognising Kosovo. They are completely closed to this issue, so this implies that music in Belgrade will not change, Rama said.

Furthermore, the prime minister stopped by Serbia’s importance for the stability of the Western Balkans and the region’s European integration. He said Albania should not want Serbia removed from the European project, as such development would have consequences for the entire region.

We are part of a region that is still not fully part of the EU. It’s us who listen to lectures and don’t lecture, that’s the rule here in Brussels. Serbia is a very important part of this mosaic of the Western Balkans. I have always been a lawyer for the fact that we should let Serbia go in the wrong direction and abandon the European project, because it would harm our region, Rama said.

However, he underlined that the road to the European Union requires meeting concrete obligations and that Serbia has shown reluctance on some of the key issues, especially in relation to Kosovo and Russia.

But on the other hand, we know how things work out, if you want to get into the EU you have to do things in many ways. When it comes to certain aspects, Serbia has witnessed a reluctance. Not only normalisation with Kosovo, but also the stance facing Russia, sanctions and other things. I would say: Yes, we need Serbia to be with us, to be part of a neighbourhood that should be a full part of the EU. Serbia must show results and must fully deserve this belonging, fully accomplishing what is non-negotiable with the EU, Rama concluded.
