The next protest will take place Saturday, with a request for justice in the assassination of Arlinda Zekaj, who was killed in her home in Pec. The protest will begin by 12:00, ahead of the cathedral of Mother Teresa in Pristina.
The call for participation has made the Council for Religious Thoughts and Action, which has appealed to citizens to join the nationwide protest, seek justice for Arlinda and all women killed in Kosovo.
In the published call, Kolestin has estimated that Arlinda’s murder has exposed the failures of the institutional chain, which, rather than protecting women who report danger, bypasss their demands for help.
Her murder, as well as the state response, has put our society into a social crisis and uncertainty that we can only overcome more state responsibilities and guarantee that women’s lives are taken seriously. On Saturday we call on you to protest nationwide to seek justice for Arlinda Zekaj and to ask this state to declare the childicide as national emergency as a pledge to all of us Kosovo girls and women. Arlinda Zakariya left us to look for responsibility, and we are extending it not only to Arlinda and every woman killed but also to every living girl and woman, it is said at Kolestin’s call.
Also, Kolestin has stated that the assassination of Arlinda has shaken the patriarchal system and that the protests must continue until they are held accountable for violence against women and girls in Kosovo.
Organisers have also filed a series of requests, including the dismissal and prosecution of officials who, according to them, have responsibilities in the Arlinda case, the dismissal of ministers Donika Grovalla and Xhelal Svechla, and the resignation of Peja chairman Gazmen Muharır.
Among other demands are the proclamation of childicide as national emergency, the provision of social residence for domestic violence survivors, the independent and apartheic property of the justice system, as well as legalisation of women’s self-preservation.
Arlinda Zekiaj was killed with axes in her home in Pec. She’s suspected of her ex-continence. Prior to the assassination, she had addressed several letters to justice institutions, warning that her life was in danger.
Several officials have been suspended in the case, but protest organisers seek broader institutional responsibility, including from the leaders of relevant institutions.
