Pentagon officials have been urging several NATO member states in recent weeks to ease public statements about the threat Russia poses, arguing that some positions of European leaders and officials are undermining security on the continent.
This has been made known to four people familiar with the issue, who have spoken on condition of anonymity.

According to them, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia are among the countries that have received messages from American officials. These countries have been asked to show more restraint in their public statements. Messages have been forwarded during bilateral meetings, while it is unknown whether similar requests have been addressed to other European governments.
This US initiative comes at the time when President Donald Trump’s administration has resumed efforts to promote a negotiated end to the war in Ukraine, which has already entered its fifth year.
Washington’s recent efforts have included incentives for Russia, including the possibility of easing sanctions, as well as pressure on Ukraine to halt attacks on Russian energy infrastructure.
Asked about this case, an Pentagon official answered: The private talks among the allies are just that, so we will not comment on these charges. )
According to one of the informers on the issue, among the statements that have disturbed American officials are the suggestions of European leaders that Russia is blocked and is using increasingly desperate measures as Ukraine’s conquest undergoes a slowdown.
One of the American officials who conveyed this message was Elbridge Colby, the head of the Pentagon politics and one of the key figures in the current revision of the number of American troops deployed in Europe. Reuters has indicated it has failed to determine which other American officials were involved.
Sources, among which there are three European officials and an American official, have not hinted that Washington’s advice is being conveyed in a confrontational way.
