Osmani: Arlinda’s letter must be transformed into a testament to society

LDK MP Vjosa Osmani has called for institutional responsibility and concrete measures in combating violence against women, speaking in the country about the case of Arlinda Zekaj.

Osmani said violence against women does not start on the day of the murder, but much earlier, when control, threat and violence are normal, while institutions fail to react on time.

Arlinda’s letter must be transformed into testament to this society, Osman stated, stressing that no woman should live in fear or remain without support.

It also criticised the way violence is handled in the institutions of justice, assessing that light sentences do not prevent repeating cases.

Osmani called for legal changes, including the treatment of childicide as a special criminal act, stricter measures against those exercising violence, and increased capacities in police and social centres.

According to her, the responsibility for protecting women should not be limited to political statements and that there should be accountability for all responsible persons, regardless of parties.

We cannot talk about freedom if the freedom of half of society is conditional on the fear of the other half, she said.

In the end, Osmani stressed that fighting violence against women requires engagement of institutions, families, schools and media so that no woman will remain alone in the face of violence.
