From calls for justice for Arlinda to agreements on The Hague Kosovo amid protests, tragedies and arrests

Saturday’s 7 November in Kosovo was marked by justice protests for Arlinda Zekay, new developments in political co-ordination for The Hague’s process, numerous cases of domestic violence and police operations. At the same time, accidents with fatal consequences and the discovery of undeclared goods at the border were among the events that took note during the day, the Signal newspaper reports.

In the spotlight was once again the assassination of Arlinda Zekiaj, who has sparked protests and constant demands for institutional responsibility.

Citizens and activists gathered in Pristina in the protest against childicide, seeking justice for murdered women and concrete measures for the protection of victims of violence.

With banners and calls against alleged institutional failures, protesters marched from the area of the cathedrals Mother Teresa towards institutions of justice and government.

Among their demands were the resignations and dismissals of responsible officials, the strengthening of defence mechanisms, and the treatment of women’s murders as urgent national issues.

The Hague turns political parties into a common table

Another important development of the day was the meeting of the task force for co-ordinating actions related to the judicial process against former KLA leaders in The Hague.

Representatives of the main political parties participated in the meeting held at the Government building.

After the meeting ended, PDK representative Vlora Citaku confirmed that several agreements have been reached, but that their contents will not be made public at this stage.

The group’s work has focused on inter-institutional co-ordination and preparation of materials that can serve during the appeals process. So far no final strategy has been presented publicly.

Seven cases of domestic violence, ten persons arrested

Meanwhile, the chronicle of security brought another disturbing balance.

According to Kosovo Police reports on the November 6th events published during today, seven cases of domestic violence have been recorded in several municipalities in the country.

The cases are reported in Pristina, Fushe Kosovo, Drenas, Kacanik, Peja and Rahovec.

Ten persons, seven of whom have been sent into custody, have been arrested in connection with them, while three others have been released in regular procedure.

The cases include claims of psychological violence, harassment, physical assault and property damage.

These reports received particular attention at a time when protests and public debate on women’s security and the responsibility of institutions are continuing in the country.

Ten tons of undeclared goods are discovered in Vremica

Kosovo Customs announced the discovery of about ten tonnes of undeclared goods during the search of a truck at the border checkpoint in Vmica.

Discommunication was identified during weight verification, which led to more detailed control.

According to Dogana, the value of undeclared goods is about $15,000, without including import duties.

The case is being handled according to relevant customs procedures.

A Day of Many Developments and Questions That Remain Open

Protests of justice, efforts for political co-ordination, domestic violence and serious security events marked Saturday in Kosovo.

At the centre of public attention remains the requirement for responsibility and concrete action by institutions, especially after Arlinda Zekimaj’s murder.

As protesters continue to seek answers, new cases of domestic violence and developments in rule bodies show that the security and functioning of institutions continue to be among the most sensitive issues in the country.
