Over 160 thousand people are expected to participate in Saturday’s protests in 34 cities in Germany, where young people will seek improvement of the education system, lowering the cost of living, and rejecting compulsory military service.

The demonstrations are organised by the group of activists éGen Z regelt) (Generata Zer takes over), within a wave of protests led by young people in several European countries. The gatherings are planned in cities like Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich.

Organisers say young people are facing increased economic pressure and lack of investment in education. An 18-year-old expected to give a speech in Munich’s protest has criticised the government, saying it has not responded to their concerns.

Meanwhile, German authorities expect the protests to be largely peaceful, but have warned of the possibility of involvement of extremist groups. Interior Minister of the Hessen region, Roman Joseck, has expressed concern that events could be accompanied by unrest, referring to violent protests in France.

In Berlin, several businesses along the Kurfürsstem boulevard have placed protections in the windows and plan to close earlier, due to fears of possible incidents.

However, the initiative has also been accompanied by questions about youth representation, as the national school student organisation in Germany, the BSK, has distanced from the organising group. She has announced she will hold a separate protest on November 20th, stressing that students’ concerns are legal.
