Belgium’s prime minister, Bart De Weaver, has tendered his resignation to King Philippe, as the ruling coalition failed to reach agreement on the 2027 budget.
De Weaver met with the King at the Royal Palace in Brussels on Monday, where he resigned after weeks of unsuccessful negotiations between the five coalition parties.

However, King Philippe did not immediately make the decision to resign, but left him pending and announced he would hold consultations with coalition party leaders.
According to public broadcaster V RT, disagreements are mainly related to the way the budget deficit faces around 10 billion euros.
The negotiations have stalled for weeks, while the parties have failed to agree on measures to be taken to secure the necessary savings.
De Weaver had rejected the possibility of the country entering the new year with a temporary budget.
Under the Belgian constitutional system, the king may reject the prime minister’s resignation or keep his decision pending, giving parties more time to reach agreement.
If the resignation is accepted, the government will continue working only with limited competencies until a new political agreement is reached.
A similar crisis had emerged at the end of 2025, when the government had sought to find about 10 billion euros in savings. After the negotiations, the coalition had reached deals on savings of 9.2 billion euros.
