The leader of a religious sect in Kenya, Paul Mackenzie, has been sentenced to 200 years in prison for killing 191 people, almost all children, in one of the most shocking cases of forced abuse and fasting in the country.

Mackenzie, founder of the International Good News Church, was convicted and sentenced Friday by the Supreme Court in Mombasa, along with more than two dozen others involved in the case.

According to the investigation, Mackenzie had convinced his followers to abandon their homes and settle in the Shakahola Forest, east of Kenya. He had promised them that by fasting to the point of death they would draw closer to God and be prepared to enter Paradise.
