Japan undertakes emergency measures following cyber attacks on companies and institutions

Japan has taken emergency measures to strengthen cyber security, following a wave of attacks affecting dozens of large companies and state institutions, causing massive flow of customer data.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has announced on Friday a 10 billion-euro package, or about $63 million, which envisions the use of artificial intelligence and the creation of specialised teams to counter cyber attacks.

During a ministerial meeting, Takaichi stressed that quick response to threats is essential, especially at a time when attacks enabled by artificial intelligence are presenting ever greater challenges, reports AP.

Right now, cases of unauthorized access and data leaks are taking place, causing great impact on citizens’ daily life and company activities, she said, calling for the engagement of all state resources in dealing with this problem.

According to the new package, Japan aims to create a more stable cyber defence system, where public institutions and private companies will exchange information, offer quick assistance to the attacked subjects and work on damage recovery.

One of the key measures is to create a specialised expert team, which will be functional by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry by the end of November. This team will use artificial intelligence to counter hackers and identify weaknesses in computer systems.

In addition, a cybersave rescue team will be formed, with experts from the public and private sector offering initial responses to companies affected by the attacks. Another team will help more vulnerable businesses strengthen their defence systems.

The Japanese government will also increase the capacities to provide access to servers used by hackers, under the strategy known as active cyber defence, legalised in October.

In the event of possible threats to national security, a team consisting of defence ministry officials, the National Police Agency and the National Office for Cyber Security will also be involved.

Through these measures, Japan aims to reach one of the highest levels of cyber security in the world and strengthen its defenses against attacks that endanger citizens’ data and economic activities.
