Plastic food packages are part of the daily routine: they wrap products in stores, store food in refrigerators, and use in many household products. But a new study raises questions about a component that was introduced as a safer alternative to previous chemicals
It’s about DINCH, a substance that makes plastic softer and flexible. Study published in the scientific magazine Environment International It has linked exposure during birth pregnancy and slightly lower child height.

However, it is a statistical connection, not a proof that chemical has directly caused these changes.
What is DINCH, and where is it used?
For years, the industry used fabrics to make plastic more flexible. With increased concerns about the effects of certain health lines, manufacturers began to replace them with other substances.
One of them is DINCH, which is used in several flexible plastic dishes, toys, medical equipment, floor materials, and other products.
It was promoted as an alternative with better security profiles, but its impact during pregnancy has not yet been sufficiently studied, Telegrafi broadcast.
What did the study with over 6,600 pregnancies reveal?
Researchers NYU Langone Health They analyzed the data of 6,617 pregnancies from the American ECHO programme, supported by the US National Institutes of Health.
They measured in urine three products of DINCH dissolution and compared the results to the birth weight, length, and genetic age of babies.
According to the analysis, about 5050 percent of women had metabol levels of DINCH metabolics, depending on the prudent ingredient.
Their presence in urine shows exposure to the chemical, but it does not specify which product it came from. Hence, results cannot be attributed only to packing food.
For any tenfold increase in an exposure indicator, the average child birth weight was about 27 grams lower.
The higher exposure was also associated with greater likelihood that the baby would be classified as small as a gestational age, weighted below the tenth per centrel for the corresponding week of pregnancy.
Although 27 grams may appear few, researchers stress the importance of assessing changes in fetal growth. This figure is average statistical, not predicting a certain pregnancy.

Why is development important?
Insufficient pregnancy growth may be linked to greater health risks later, including metabolic, cardiovascular and development problems.
This does not mean that DINCH has tried to cause these diseases.
The study showed that links with some indicators were stronger during the third quarter. The results also differed according to the child’s gender, which requires further research.
lab studies in cells and animals have suggested that DINCH decay products can interfere with hormone function and inflammatory processes, but these mechanisms have not yet been proven in pregnant women.
When a Safer Replacement Raises New Concerns
Scientists call this phenomenon inappropriate replacement: A problematic chemical is replaced by another, whose long – term effects are not fully known.
The lead author of the study, Dr. Leonardo Trasande requires that chemicals be tested more rigorously before widespread use, instead of the possible risks being investigated only after public exposure.
How can you reduce exposure to everydayity?
Consumers may take some simple measures:
- Use glass or steel to store food.
- To avoid heating food into plastic plants that are not suitable for that purpose.
- They choose alternatives without plastic when possible.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on safe use of the ambalage.
This does not mean that any plastic package contains DINCH or that its use automatically causes damage.
For pregnant women, the message is to reduce unnecessary exposure without being alarmed. The study raises important questions about the safety of daily materials, but more research is needed to determine whether there is a cause-pass relationship. /Telegraphy/
