Tragic accidents with 115 victims, EU launches investigation into misuse of funds in Spanish railways

European Union prosecutors have launched investigations into possible misuse of EU funds, which were destined to improve the railway line in Spain, where a train crash caused the deaths of 69 people last week.

Prosecutors, backed by a special unit of Spain’s Guardia Civil Security Forces, said the investigation was under way in the offices of the Adif railway infrastructure and the AESF Iron Security Agency.

October 28th accident on high-speed Madrid train line – Seville was one of the worst railway disasters in Europe this century.

This is the EU’s second investigation into fraud by funds in Spain’s railway sector, launched this year, as 46 people lost their lives on the same line in Adamuz in January.

Last week, a train of the state-owned Renfe company crashed into the back of a forbidden train owned by the private Spanish company Iryo, outside the village of Urda, about 130 miles [130 km] south of Madrid.

The LZB communications system, which monitors the position of trains, had been out of operation and the Renfe train was given the signal to resume the normal – speed movement, despite the failure of the Iryo train ahead to resume its journey.

Two accidents, occurring nine months apart on the same rail line, have caused a total of 115 victims and dozens of injuries. (A2 Television
