Lionel Mess has made his decision about his future. The silver legend will stay at Inter Miami, according to a recent report in the media.
Barcelona’s former star aims to fulfill the contract with the American club, which is valid until at least 2028, can even extend its stay in the United States beyond that deadline. There is no ongoing negotiations on a return to the club where he started his career, Newell’s Old Boys.

Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Friday that Messi has no plans to leave Inter Miami, nor to be transferred to Newell’s Old Boys, despite recent reports linking him to a return to Argentina.
Romano added that Messy and his family are very happy in Miami and that the focus of the Argentinians is on meeting the current agreement. Any discussion about continuing to stay beyond 2028 can wait until later.
In October 2025, Inter Miami announced that it had continued its contract with the Argentinian captain until the end of the 2028 season in MLS, bringing an end to short – term speculation about his future.
Messie joined Inter Miami in the summer of 2023, after leaving Paris Saint-Germani, while his transfer caused global interest in the American league to grow dramatically.
He also led the club towards the first trophies in history: Leaguer Cup in 2023 and Cupgers Shield in 2024.
But why was it talked about a return to Newell’s Old Boys?
It’s all about his special relationship with the club where it all started. Messy joined the team academy from Rosario at the age of seven before leaving Argentina to Barcelona when he was 13.
