Serbia is facing a significant political period, at a time when mass protests led by students have increased pressure on President Allexander Vuciq and his governance.
According to Reuters report, early parliamentary elections come after months of alleged anti-corruption protests and authoritarian tendencies in the country.
The student movement took off after the November 2024 tragedy when the collapse of a concrete shelter at the Novi Sad railway station killed 16 people. The event sparked widespread discontent and demand for institutional responsibility.
Since then, protesters have organised large gatherings, gaining support from other parts of Serbian society. They have sought accountability for tragedy and change in the way of government.
However, Vuciq continues to have support from a portion of the electorate. His supporters assess investments in infrastructure and economic development in recent years, while opponents criticise him for the concentration of power and problems related to corruption.
Political developments in Serbia are also being followed closely because of the influence they may have in the region. The power of the student movement and its ability to translate protests into political changes remain among the main issues of public debate.
