Almost all of Taiwan has been paralyzed by the approach of the Champ typhoon, which is expected to bring strong winds and intense rainfall. Although the storm has begun to weaken, authorities warn it could directly strike the island.
According to Taiwan Central Weather Administration ( Champ, who at its height was classified as supertayphoon, was recording winds at speeds of about 191 miles [191 km] an hour near its center.
At the time of the report, the storm was about 200 miles [320 km] east of southern Taiwan. According to predictions, it is expected to pass near the northeastern part of the island before heading north, near the Chinese coast, and then toward southern Japan.
The preliminary balance is a victim and 94 people injured. Meanwhile, about 1,300 people have been evacuated from mountainous areas because of the risk of heavy rainfall and landslides.
CWA Meteorologist Liu Pei-tenng has stated to Reuters that you cannot rule out the possibility of the typhoon coming to the ground, if you change the trajectory or slow down the movement during its approach to the island.
According to him, the great extent of the storm constitutes one of the main dangers, as its slowdown may cause Taiwan to face powerful winds for a longer period of time.
Authorities in coastal cities have sent urgent warnings to local phones, announcing that winds can exceed 150 miles per hour [150 km] and urging them to flee immediately.
In mountainous areas in the north, including the region around the capital of Taipei, rainfall is projected to reach about three feet [1 m].
Taiwanese authorities are continuing to monitor the situation and have called on citizens to respect warnings, as well as to avoid areas endangered by floods, strong winds and landslides.
