The Russian Internal Security Agency, FSB, has announced the arrest of a German national who is suspected of deserting Ukrainian armed forces. The news was published by Russian state news agency T ASS. According to Russian authorities, the husband served as a mercenary for Ukraine, specifically as a sniper. The FSB claims he defected after failing to receive the promised payment.
Russian authorities are considering the possibility of launching a criminal procedure against him for mercenary activities. According to TASS report, German national served in Bundeswehr, the German Army, from 1996 to 2010. However, FSB claims cannot be verified independently, DW reports.

Did he fight twice for Ukraine?
The FSB has not revealed where the suspect was arrested. According to published data, he has participated as a Gundeshower soldier in missions in Afghanistan and Somalia during 2004-2010, while after leaving the German Army reportedly fought as mercenaries in Syria.
But according to FSB, from 2016 to 2018 he served in one of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ territorial protection units. This period coincides with the postexploitation of Crime from Russia but with the launch of Ukraine’s full Russian occupation in 2022.
Russian authorities claim the German has been placed on the front line in the Donnetsk region, which at the time was partly controlled by pro-Russian separatists. He returned to Ukraine for financial reasons in 2025 and signed a three – year military service contract.
FSB reports repeated arrests
Russia, which launched its extensive military offensive against Ukraine in February 2022, often publishes information on the arrest of persons suspected of working with Ukrainian forces. The FSB also regularly warns Russian citizens against involvement in activities considered crimes against the Russian state.
A week ago, The FSB announced the arrest of a Swedish national who is accused of fighting for Ukraine as commander of a unit of fears. According to Russian authorities, he was arrested during an illegal crossing of the border into the region of Pskov, west of Russia.
Suedez allegedly had planned sabotage acts and terrorist attacks on Russian military targets.
Over the past four years, Russian courts have imposed long prison sentences on hundreds of people charged with treason, sabotage, or spying. Among them are foreign citizens who are convicted of alleged mercenary activities in support of Ukraine.
In April of this year, Russian authorities also arrested a German citizen who was suspected of carrying an artisan bomb in his bag. According to the charges, it was planning to stage an attack on a public object in Russia on behalf of Ukraine.
