A bird in Amsterdam’s Zoo Artis has entered history, becoming the world’s first two – prosthetic bill produced with 3D printing technology.

The bird had broken both the top and the lower part of the bill, having difficulty feeding and in caring for itself.

To help her, the zoo cooperated with the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Utrecht.

Experts designed two plastic prosthetics using the remaining parts of the original beak and scans of the bird’s head.

Prothesis were introduced during surgery and fixed with screws.

At first, veterinarians feared that the bird would not adapt to the new beaks, but the results were encouraging.

From the day of the intervention, he began using them as the next morning he managed to catch a mouse from the ground and feed himself.

According to the zoo, bird cases with a beak prosthetic have already been reported, but this is the first time a bird is equipped with prosthetics for both the top and the lower.

Experts are now monitoring its behavior and adaptation while also preparing spare parts in case the prosthetics are damaged.

Special attention is also being given to his mate’s response. The zoo hopes that the new beak will help the bird not only in feeding but also in interacting with its mate and in caring for the young in the future. /Telegraphy/
