The metal rod for measuring engine oil levels, which for decades has been a common part of cars, is gradually being replaced by electronic technology in new models.
Instead of manual control, more and more producers are using sensors that measure oil levels and display the data directly on the instrument panel or on the vehicle screen.
According to manufacturers, this change relates to the way drivers use modern cars, expecting integrated systems to report automatically about potential problems without having to open the engine cap.
Andrew. Brudnicki of Mercedes-Benz has explained that electronic measurement can help prevent engine damage, warning drivers when oil levels fall below the permitted limit or exceed normal values.
This technology can also reduce the risk of mistakes in manual measurements. A car parked on steep surface or measuring in inappropriate temperature conditions can lead to incorrect reading of oil levels.
Michael Crosssen from Consumer Reports has warned that drivers can add more oil than they should, wrongly thinking that the level is low. Overloading can cause engine problems, while using inadequate oil can have consequences for the car.
Another factor affecting this change is security. Modern cars, especially hybrids, have high- pressure components, making intervention under the cover of the most complex and potentially dangerous engine for people without the necessary knowledge.
However, electronic systems are not flawed. They depend on the functioning of sensors and electronic devices, while in case the driver defect may not be able to control the oil level in a traditional way.
Despite the advantages of new technology, traditional bars remain a simple and practical tool for direct oil control. Hence, combining both methods would enable drivers to benefit from electronic sensors and manual control safety.
