In accordance with this long-standing civil participation practice, he has delivered his ballot by mail to Chicago. The Holy Father expresses his belief in the right and duty of citizens to participate in democratic processes, says the Vatican’s announcement.

The Vatican has not disclosed which candidates the Pope has voted for.

Leo XIV, 71, was born in Chicago and is the first pope of American origin. According to the newspaper éChicago Sun-Times, he was registered to vote in the state of Illinois by his native name, Robert Francis Prevost, while on October 3rd had requested mail ballot.

In the November 3rd election, voters in Illinois will choose the successor of Senator Dick Durbin, who is leaving office, and will decide whether to give the governor a warrant JB Pritsker.

Pope Leo XIV has had some public clashes with US President Donald Trump, especially with regard to the Iran war, the issue of immigrants and American administration initiatives.

In March, the pope declared that God rejects the prayers of those who start wars and have shed blood upon them.

Meanwhile, in April, it deemed Trump’s threat to the destruction of Iranian civilisation unacceptable.

He has also called for a profound reflection on how immigrants are treated in the US.

Leo XIV was chosen to head the Catholic Church, which numbers some 1.4 billion believers in May 2025.
