Only 43 votes distinguish the Senate candidates in Mississippi

The race for a seat in the U.S. Senate in Mississippi remains extremely close, with only 43 votes, the difference between the incumbent Republican candidate Cindy Hyde-Smith, and Democrat Scott Colom.

According to CNN projections, with about 96 per cent of the votes counted, Hyde-Smith and Columbus split by only 43 votes. That’s a smaller difference than the number of players on the American football team at Mississippi University, Ole Miss.

If Columbus succeeds in winning this race and takes the republican country, it would mark one of the greatest mid-term election surprises for the Senate, it would broadcast Telegrafi.

However, the result may also affect independent candidate Ty Pinkins, who, according to current projections, is expected to get about 2.1 percent of the vote. This percentage is significantly higher than the 0.01 percent difference between Hyde-Smith and Columbus.

What is expected next?

Even if the final difference between candidates remains only a few votes, a simple procedure for recounting votes is not envisioned in Mississippi. State law does not allow automatic recount or recount at the request of candidates. However, a court could order a recount if a legal dispute is presented.

The final result may not be known for a few days, as authorities must wait for the arrival of votes by mail. These ballot papers must have been posted by election day and reach relevant centres by November 10th.

Postal votes, which may be used by citizens meeting the established conditions, including soldiers located abroad and elderly, may be smaller this year compared to temporary votes.

The latter, known in Mississippi as leaflets under oath, are given the names of those whose names are not found on election lists or who have not presented an identification document with acceptable photos on Election Day.

These ballots can be verified and accepted for counting by the November 10th deadline.

Democrat Scott Colom’s campaign told CNN that it believes there are still about 15 thousand such ballots without being included in the result. /Telegraphy/
