Survivors of sexual abuse by clergymen have approved an 800 million-dollar deal with the New York Catholic Archbishop to settle claims of about 1,300 people, Reuters reports.

Lawyers announced the approval Saturday, while the archbishop had accepted the payment in May. This is the second largest agreement of its kind in the United States, after that of $880 million reached by the 2024 archbishop of Los Angeles.

The legal firm Jeff Anderson & Associates, which represents 300 survivors, described the agreement as an important moment in efforts for justice.

In addition to financial compensation, the New York Archbishop has pledged to publish documents related to sexual abusers within the Church.

The agreement enables survivors to continue legal battles against Church security companies for additional compensation, while Archbishop avoids bankruptcy, Reuters records Dukajini.

The Catholic Church has paid billions of dollars in compensation deals in the United States in recent years. These processes were added after New York and other states adopted laws that temporarily opened the way for victims of sexual abuse in childhood to file charges even in cases that occurred decades ago.
