France’s President Emmanuel Macron has called the terrorist attack and racist killing one person and wounding five others, including a 12-year-old girl, who took place this Friday in a suburb of Paris.

What happened today, I tell you, is a turning point, because it is the first time we face a terrorist act planned to kill our countrymen, our children, based on their skin color or religion, Macron told reporters.

The event occurred on Friday, when the gunman opened fire with an automatic weapon at a gas station, a medical center and a children’s playground in Trappes, a suburb of Paris.

Authorities announced that a 39-year-old suspect identified as Kevin T has been arrested.

His last name was not disclosed, in line with the usual practice in such criminal investigations in France.

The attack occurs at a moment of particular tension in France, following nationwide protests that turned into violence last Saturday, and on the eve of other demonstrations expected this weekend.

Some far right politicians have blamed immigration for the robberies and vandalism in several French cities on 17 October.
