A Greek-owned container ship has sunk on Wednesday in the Black Sea, after being hit by three seamen on Bulgaria’s coast. All 18 crew members have been rescued, while authorities have not yet identified those responsible for the attack.
The case is part of a series of ship attacks on the western part of the Black Sea this month, adding concerns about the impact of Russia’s war on Ukraine on maritime transport security in the region.

Ship ONT MAKE, which sailed under Liberia’s flag, carried 421 containers and was located in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, outside the territorial waters of this country. It had left the Haifa of Israel and was traveling to the port of Constanta in Romania when it was attacked.
The shocks caused serious damage, causing the ship to eventually sink. Among the 18 crew members were 14 Filipino and four Ukrainian citizens who managed to be saved and transported safely to the Bulgarian port of Varna, according to the management company. Contships Management.
The Bulgarian government has announced that during this month at least six ships have been attacked with fear off the country’s coast. According to authorities’ statements, about two dozen sailors have allegedly lost their lives in these incidents.
In the face of escalation of the situation, Bulgaria, a member of the European Union and NATO, has sought help to strengthen security along its Black Sea coast.
Bulgarian Navy Commander Kiril Mihaylov told national television that authorities had been warned of a possible attack by a French patrol plane but had failed to prevent it.
Meanwhile, preliminary checks conducted Thursday have not recorded visible signs of pollution from the shipwreck. However, its cargo included lithium-on batteries, corrosive fluids, acids and industrial equipment, which requires further monitoring of the area to avoid possible environmental risks.
