Nico Williams has rejected his agent’s statements concerning the failure to transfer Barcelona, stressing that the decision to stay at the Athletic Bilbao was entirely his and his family’s.
The Spanish side attacker has repeatedly been linked to a passage to Barcelona, but eventually decided to continue his career in San Mames. His representative’s recent statements, Felix Tainta, have restored discussions on reasons that prevented transfer from being implemented in 2024.

Tainta had claimed that Barcelona’s financial difficulties and rules of financial dealt with the failure of negotiations. According to him, the player needed assurances that he could register and play for the Catalonas club.
There’s a moment in the negotiations when Nico can’t go without playing. Nico’s a Formula 1’s car, the agent said.
Still, Williams did not agree with this version of events, stressing that the final decision was his and his family’s.
My brother was clear about what he said. It’s hard when your name gets involved in things like that. Felix made a mistake with what he said, things aren’t like that.
The final decision is made by me, my brother, and my family, Williams declared after Athletic Bilbao’s victory over Getafes, according to Diario SPORT.
The 23-year-old stressed that he had never doubted his desire to stay at the Bask club, despite numerous offers at hand.
My aim is to be here and that should not be questioned. Barcelona, Arsenal, PSG and many other clubs I told them no because I wanted to stay here. I hope people understand.
Williams also spoke of the criticism he received on social networks, stressing that online reactions do not necessarily reflect reality and his report with fans.
Social networks are not real life. I stand by the people who come to Lesama. There are many children who want to be like me and look at me as an example because I want to be an important figure for them.
Nico Williams has confirmed his commitment to Athletic Bilbaos by signing a new contract that keeps him connected to the club until June 2035./Telegraphy/
