Northern Macedonia currently does not plan to replace visa fees. Directionality is toward electronic payment and a system where drivers would pay according to the distance traveled on the highway.

According to Transport Minister Aleksandar Nikolloski, tests show that more than 70 percent of local vehicles do not leave the municipalities where they are registered, while highways and express routes are used by about 30 percent.

He estimates that a general visa would create additional expenses for owners who rarely use these roads.

Another argument is transit traffic. According to the data cited, Corridor 10 is used by some 4.5 million vehicles per year, while a significant share of the earnings from the payment points is provided by foreign travelers.

During 2025, about 67.6m euros have been collected from street payments.

However, the crane does not necessarily mean payment for each vehicle. In some European countries, it is purchased only by drivers using the relevant road network, choosing a period of validity. Hence, the question remains whether this model would be more convenient for the state and regular users.

The Public Company for State Road is analyzing a closed electronic system, where payment would be calculated according to miles of travel. Such a model is being considered for Corridor 8, while in parallel the use of M-TAG equipment and electronic payments is expanding.

If implemented, drivers who travel longer distances would pay more, while those who use only short segments would pay less.

It still remains open whether subscriptions or reliefs will be envisioned for citizens who travel daily to work.
