An unusual view from Antarctica’s icy continent has attracted the attention of scholars and the public. NASA satellite images show a natural formation on the island of Vega, which from above is strikingly similar to a giant skull.
The view was created by the combination of rocks, ice, and glacier formations. What looks like the opening of the eye is actually a rock peak that emerges on the ice surface, while other parts are formed by natural relief in the area.

However, behind this impressive sight is another phenomenon that is being followed by scientists – changes on the surface of glaciers.
During 2026 the region experienced periods of temperature above average and limited snowfall. As a result, darker ice and rock surfaces were exposed in some areas.
Unlike fresh snow, which reflects much of the sun’s radiation, dark surfaces absorb more energy and can become warmer. This process can affect the rate of melting ice during warmer periods.
The island of Vega also has an interesting history of exploration, as it relates to early polar expeditions and the extreme challenges facing explorers in the early 20th century.
Thus, what appears to be an unusual image created by nature also serves as a reminder of changes taking place in one of the most sensitive climate regions of the planet.
