A Russian oil tank has headed for New York, in what is expected to be the first shipment of this kind to the United States since 2022. Transport comes after an agreement between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, Reuters reports, referring to shipping data published Friday.
Cisterna Agioi Fanendes, which sailed under the flag of Malta, was loaded with 400,000 tons of oil with very low sulfur content at the Russian port of Primorsk, in the Baltic Sea, on October 22nd. According to data from the LSEG company, the ship is expected to arrive in the US on 7 November.

For now, it is unknown who the buyer and the cargo salesman are.
Trump announced the deal this month, within efforts to lower high oil prices ahead of the US mesmandate elections, held on 3 November.
As part of the deal, the US president suspended implementation of certain provisions of a new US law on sanctions against Russia. He also threatened European countries with restricting American oil exports if they do not release more fuel from their emergency reserves, with the aim of lowering prices.
On October 9th, Trump said Russia would immediately export 300,000 tonnes of diesel oil, or about 2.25 million barrels, to the US and international markets. According to him, another 500,000 tons would be sent in November, while another million tons would be followed later.
U.S. oil and oil products from Russia were banned in 2022 during the administration of former President Joe Biden, following the launch of the Russian war in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, since February 2023, when the European Union imposed an embargo on Russian imports of oil products, Russia has directed exports mainly to Turkey, Brazil and African countries. It also supplies Central Asian countries via railway transport.
