The Appeals Court has postponed today, on October 28, 2026, the first-degree session of Education Syla, sentenced to 22 years in prison for the murder of Valmir Breznica at a supermarket in Podujevo.

The signal newspaper, which has monitored the session, reports that the lack of damaged parties, which currently have no legal representatives, has become the cause for the postponement.

The chairman of the court’s court, Judge Skender Qoqaj, indicated that the court had communicated with those who had expressed great interest in participating in the session.

However, their former legal representative has been granted license from the Oda of Kosovo Lawyers ( OAK, while the injured have not yet hired another lawyer.

The court also disclosed that the complaint filed on behalf of the damaged party was dismissed as illegal, since the lawyer who had exercised it had no valid licenses.

Loyal R. Berisha: Without guaranteed rights from the damaged side, the decision cannot be fair

Faithful Lawyer R. Berisha, defender of Education Syla, did not oppose the postponement of the session.

He stressed that damaged parties should be guaranteed the right to listen, no matter how long they may be needed.

They have the right to be heard, as long as they need time, because the decision in the end, without providing for the damaged side, cannot be fair or legal. I welcome this college decision, Berisha said.

Murder That Shocked Podujevo

The case relates to the murder of 34-year-old Valmir Breznica, on September 11, 2023, at the supermarket “Interex” in Podujevo.

The victim was along with their wife and their 4-year-old son when the shooting occurred. His wife was also injured by the shooting.

According to the Pristina Constitutional Prosecutor’s Act, Arsim Syla was suspected of inciting his minor son, Lord Syla, to kill Breznica for revenge motives after an earlier conflict.

The prosecution claims that Edsim Syla had guided her son to the victim, while the minor had fired several shots.

Education Syla has denied the charges, rejecting claims he had planned or promoted the murder.

The 22 Years of Prison

On February 26, 2026, the Constitutional Court in Pristina found Arsim Syla guilty and sentenced her to 22 years in prison.

The trial was proclaimed by the court, led by Judge Fatime Dermaku, with members Gent Beka and Sultan Hoti.

The sentence is also estimated at the time spent in custody.

After complaining of the indictment, the case has been passed to the Court of Appeals, where today’s session failed to develop due to procedural barriers related to representation of the damaged party.
