Belgium’s prime minister offers resignation following failure of 2027 budget agreement

Belgium’s prime minister, Bart De Wever, has tendered his resignation to King Philippe, as the five-party ruling coalition failed to reconcile for the 2027 budget.

However, the king has postponed the decision to accept the resignation and has announced he will hold consultations with party leaders who make up the parliamentary majority, the Anadolu Agency reports.

De Weaver has remained at the meeting with the King at the Royal Palace in Brussels for over 90 minutes, the Belgian public broadcaster announced VRT.

Budget negotiations have been stalled for weeks, while the Belgian government is trying to find solutions to the budget deficit of about 10 billion euros.

Disagreements within the coalition are mainly related to the positions of the socialist party flamande Vooruit and the centre-right Frankophone party, the Reformist Movement ( MR).

De Weaver had earlier rejected the possibility of the country entering the new year with a temporary budget that would allow the government to function according to the framework of pre-year spending.

Belgium’s constitutional system allows the king to refuse to accept the prime minister’s resignation or postpone the decision so as to give coalition parties time to reach agreement.

If the resignation is accepted, the government can continue working with limited competencies until reaching a new political solution.

A similar budget crisis had occurred at the end of 2025. At that time, De Weaver had asked the king for an extension of the 50-day deadline, while on November 24th the coalition had agreed to cut spending worth 9.2 billion euros.
