Italy and Spain have agreed to drop border controls on each other, ending a three-month dispute caused by the influx of migrants towards the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, Italy’s Interior Ministry announced on Thursday.

The Italian right government had suspended agreements on free movement with Spain on July 31st, arguing it wanted to ensure that migrants entering Ceuta did not continue their journey to Italian territory.

Madrid reacted by imposing similar measures on Italy, while describing Rome’s actions as unfair, contrary to the interests of the European Union and discrimination against the population of Spain, Telegraph broadcasts.

According to the Italian announcement, the two countries’ interior ministers held a telephone conversation and agreed not to extend the suspension of the Schengen area’s agreements, which enable movement without regular border controls among the participating countries.

The Italian ministry announced that the decision was made following a careful assessment of the situation and will be accompanied by greater exchange of information, with the aim of ensuring the security of the Schengen common zone. /Telegraphy/
