US President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, has named Russian President Vladimir Putin, as a former Romanian President, during the meeting he held with him Wednesday in Russia, within the framework of efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine.
Witkoff met with Putin after a day earlier he had held talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Oslo, Norway.
You talk so much about my president, President Trump, as a humanitarian. You’re also a humanitarian, sir, and I welcome this, congratulate you and thank you again, Witkoff told the Russian president.
During the meeting, the US envoy also thanked Putin for the deal reached with Washington earlier this month for importing Russian oil, saying Trump was very grateful for the deal.
According to Russian state news agency T A The SS, Putin said the first shipment of oil under the deal was expected to be launched by Russia within two to three days.
The oil deal has displeaseed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and affected relations between the parties. Trump, meanwhile, has suspended several sanctions and has declared Ukraine must choose a new leader.
In another development, Russia has released American national Stephen Kubard, 74, who had been held in prison for about four years on Wednesday. The release of retired American teachers was reported after Witkoff’s arrival in St Petersburg.
Hubard had been sentenced to nearly seven years in prison in a criminal colony in 2024, since Russian authorities accused him of serving in a protection unit in the Ukrainian city of Izzyum. He was captured by Russian forces after the start of the total invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
US President Donald Trump, has stated on social networks that Kubard’s release came after a request he made directly to Putin last week.
Other cases of the release of banned American citizens in Russia have been carried out through prison exchanges.
