A group suspected of drug trafficking and illegal weapons has been hit by Carabiniers in Italy, following an investigation that began with the seizure of 22kg of cocaine and led to the discovery of a large cannabis plantation in the mountain area of Val di Lanzo.
During the operation, authorities seized more than 1,200 cannabis plants, worth over 1m euros. This amount is added to the seized cocaine in April, whose value in the retail market was estimated at at least 4m euros.
The investigation began after the arrest of Albanian national Arthur Hysenaj, 47, in whose residences in Asti were found 22kg of cocaine. During the raids, carabinieri also discovered four pistols with deleted serial numbers, an artisan silencer, and more than 200 bullets.
Hyseyan was later sentenced to 10 years in prison, while investigators continued their work to identify other persons allegedly linked to it. In July, five other Albanian citizens were identified and denounced under investigation.
Recent checks, developed in 13 flats and property in Asti and the surrounding area, took investigators to a quay at Val di Lanzo, adapted to developing cannabis in closed environments. More than 1,200 plants were found inside it, while the object was equipped with ventilation, lighting and heating systems to create conditions controlled for cultivation.
According to the investigation, the power to operate the plantation was illegally obtained by the public network through a secret link with cables placed underground.
An Albanian national resident of Asti, suspected of taking care of the plantation, was arrested at the scene. He was sent to Ivra Prison. Meanwhile, two other people are under investigation because during raids on their residences, ammunition for firearms and small quantities of narcotics were found.
The so-called balance of the operation includes seized drugs worth over 5m euros, a person sentenced to 10 years in prison, the arrest of the suspected plantation guardian and five convicted persons. Investigations continue to brighten the size of the network and links between suspected persons.
