Protesters gathered before the prime minister in Tirana have overturned the chairs set Wednesday morning by Prime Minister Edi Rama as a sign of his readiness for dialogue. Students have insisted on the government leader’s resignation request, refusing the invitation for talks.

Protesters’ action has strained the situation in front of the prime minister’s building, where police have intervened.

Meanwhile, professors have staged protests before Tirana’s Polytechnic University in support of students and students. The head of Albania’s University Workers Union, Sander Kovaci, has indicated that the teaching boycott has started Wednesday and will continue until a second announcement.

According to him, the decision was made by the union leadership at the meeting held on October 20th in the protest square. Boykoti comes in sign of response to the created situation and allegations of violence against students and protesters.

Rama announces rent subsidies for students

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Edi Rama has announced a new stand-by scheme for students who have difficulty coping with residential costs in Tirana.

During a meeting with banking system directors, Rama has declared that the government would cover 50 per cent of the rent value for students meeting the set criteria.

According to him, the move is part of a broader package aimed at easing the financial burden of young people and supporting several thousand apartments a year in Tirana.

Rama has also indicated that the package includes loans of zero interest to young couples and loans of interest to those who launch entrepreneurial initiatives.

It has also warned of increasing the budget for youth employment policies, including financing new businesses and venture support schemes, where the state will serve as guarantees.

The announcement of new economic measures comes at a time when students continue the protest, demanding the prime minister’s resignation and meeting their demands.
