Elections in Serbia: What happens if you win or lose Aleksandar Vuciq?

The international news agency Reuters has analysed scenarios that could host Serbia after this Sunday’s parliamentary elections, where the student anti-corruption movement aims to end Aleksandar Vuciqi’s political dominance.

Several electoral lists, including those led by the Serbian Progressive Party ( SNS), student movement, students win, Socialist Party of Serbia ( The SPS) and the pro-European opposition coalition Serbia European.

The SNS list has focused the campaign on economic growth, wage and pension growth, investments in infrastructure and political stability. Vuciqi, who according to Reuters resigned from the presidential post on September 27th, intends to become prime minister.

Meanwhile, the student movement was created after protests sparked by the collapse of a section of the railway station in Novi Sad in November 2024, where 16 people died. It requires accountability, fighting corruption and transparency in public procurements.

Another force in the race is the Socialist Party of Serbia, led by Ivica Dacic, SNS’s longtime ally. While the coalition Serbia-European support closer integration with the European Union, sanctions against Russia and democratic reforms.

According to Reuters, corruption and government accountability are among the main campaign issues. Protesters accuse Vuciqi and his associates of corruption, media control and mistreatment of demonstrators, charges that Serbian authorities have denied.

What happens if you win or lose Vucciki?

If he wins and manages to become prime minister, Vuciqi would continue his political leadership in Serbia. Such a result could preserve Belgrade’s policy between the goal of membership in the European Union and close relations with Russia and China.

In the event of defeat, according to Reuters analysis, the way for important domestic reforms could be opened, including strengthening institutions and stronger anti-corruption measures.

In this election, voters choose election lists rather than individual candidates. The election commission has approved a total of 18 lists for the parliamentary race.
