Paralysed attacks in Sudan cause massive power cuts in eastern states

Sudan’s Speed Support paramilitary forces have launched an attack co-ordinated with fears against five power plants, causing massive power cuts throughout the country’s birth, a government official said.

The Drons hit two thermal power plants, each in Al-Jazira and Gedaref states and one in the state of the White Nile, resulting in power cuts in large parts of these three states, the official said on condition of anonymity, The Guardian writes.

The three states are controlled by the Sudanese Army, which has been at war with RSF, its former ally since April 2023, broadcasts the signal.

The United Nations has repeatedly warned that regular attacks on thermal power plants threaten health and services for millions already facing the world’s worst famine crisis.

Babier Yousef, a resident of Al-Fao, in Gedaref, said electricity had been out since early morning.

My son is diabetic, his insulin should be stored in the refrigerator, he said on the phone, adding that he was afraid he would be unable to replace the drug if it broke. We have no idea when electricity will return, he said.

Electricity has been shut down for days following past attacks with paramilitary fears at thermal power plants and hydroelectric dams.

The Sudan war is currently being fought mainly through drones, with both sides launching sophisticated attacks across the country, killing dozens of civilians at the same time.

In the first three weeks of October, fearful attacks killed more than 300 people and injured hundreds more, according to a UN assessment.

Africa’s third largest country, with a population of about 50 million, has been destroyed by war, which, according to estimates by aid workers, has killed more than 200,000 people.

Most Sudan hospitals have been forced to close, at least 8 million children do not go to school, and large parts of the country do not have access to basic services.

Abdelhafez Daafalah, a 54-year-old farmer, said by telephone from the town of Al-Juneid to Al-Jazeira: Electric energy had just begun to improve three months earlier, the power plant the militia had just destroyed, and we hoped that our irrigation pumps would finally start operating again. )

We hoped we would finally be able to return to agriculture, but now the station has been hit, he said, frustrated after nearly four years of inability to work its land.

Farmers in Al-Jazira have been struggling to rehabilitate and restore their land since the army recovered the state from RSF last year.

In the east, in Gedaref, Ibrahim Mohammed, 37, a food salesman, said he was facing power cuts for hours before the strike, signaling. Now that I have chicken in the fridge, we’ll lose our entire stock, or we’ll be forced to sell it at any price, which is still a loss, he said.

Sudan is also facing unprecedented inflation, and its currency has lost more than 25% of its value in recent weeks.
