European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos has warned that Serbia will find it very difficult to progress towards membership in the European Union unless it demonstrates its foreign and security policy with that of the EU, especially in Russia and the war in Ukraine.
Asked whether Serbia could join the EU without imposing sanctions on Russia, Kos stressed that noncompliance with the European bloc’s positions on strategic issues would pose a serious obstacle to the integration process.

A country that does not approach us on issues of strategic interest, such as foreign and security policy, including the joint fight against Russia, especially in the context of Russian aggression in Ukraine, will not be able to progress. This will be very, very difficult, she said.
However, Kos announced that the European Union has not yet started talks with Serbia’s new government. According to her, the new government should initially be formed in Belgrade, after which opportunities for continuing co-operation with Serbia will be assessed.
Meanwhile, according to preliminary results of parliamentary elections in Serbia, the list supported by students has secured 52,71 per cent of the vote, leaving behind the coalition back supported by former President Aleksandar Vuciq, who has received 39.17 per cent.
