Deliu-Codra seeks independent mechanism for monitoring Specialised Chambers

PDK MP Blerta Deliu-Codra has called for the creation of a professional and independent mechanism for monitoring procedures near Specialised Chambers in The Hague, based on concerns raised in the Ombudsman’s report.

Speaking in the Kosovo Assembly, Deliu-Codra said the report raises concerns about independence, supervision and respect for the human rights of four former KLA leaders being tried at The Hague.

It singled out the assessment that the mandate of the Specialised Chambers has deviated from the original goal, as well as concerns about transparency, accountability, equality of parties and the right to fair judgment.

Deliu-Codra also cited issues related to private and family life during visits to detention, time available for defence, and access to information about the origin and reliability of materials used in the process, especially those coming from Serbia.

She demanded that Parliament and Government take steps to address these concerns, as well as that they be forwarded to international mechanisms, including the Council of Europe and the European Union.

Heashim Thaci, Kadri Veselini, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi are fully right in respecting their procedural guarantees, their families have the right to expect Kosovo institutions to fulfil their duty with seriousness and determination. Therefore, on behalf of the PDK we demand that this Parliament and Government enable support of a professional and independent mechanism for monitoring the procedure near the Specialised Chamber in full compliance with the legal framework and guarantees for judicial independence, Deliu-Codra has declared.
