Turkey has nominated diplomat Feridun Sinirlioglu, currently secretary-general of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe ( O As a candidate to succeed Antónnio Guterres at the helm of the United Nations Organization ( The UN.
According to the Turkish state agency Anadolu, his candidacy aims to serve as a compromise solution, in terms when the process of choosing Guterre’s successor has stalled for months.
The official request for his candidacy was handed over to the UN headquarters yesterday in New York by the Turkish ambassador to the organisation.
Sinirlioglu is an experienced diplomat and has represented Turkey at the UN from 2016 to 2023.
At the end of 2024, he was unanimously elected at the helm of the OSCE.
António Guterre’s mandate ends at the end of this year.
His successor’s election is being conducted through consultations on the UN Security Council, where the five permanent US members, China, Russia, France and Great Britain have veto rights.
Although many member states have voiced support for choosing a woman for the first time in the post, as well as for a candidate from Latin America or the Caribbean, Sinirlioglu does not meet either of these two criteria.
His candidacy is backed by Turkish President Recep Tayip Erdogan, who has repeatedly called for reforming the UN and limiting the impact of five permanent members of the Security Council
