Floods in Argentina, two dead and over 2,000 evacuated persons

Floods in northeast Argentina have caused the deaths of two people and have forced more than 2,000 others to flee their homes, while rising river levels are threatening some communities in the region.

Heavy rain clouds have caused the Paraná, Uruguay, and Iguuzú rivers to escape from bed, affecting areas near Argentina’s borders with Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

In Chaco province, about 1,200 to 1,300 people have been forced to abandon their residences, mainly in the towns of Puerto Villelas and Barranqueras. That’s what Deputy Civil Protection Secretary Gustavo Santos made known.

He warned that the situation could continue for months, as the river level is expected to continue to fluctuate.

Meanwhile, in the neighbouring province of Corrieentes, more than 1,000 people have left their homes, according to Civil Protection data.

Floods have included some neighborhoods in Paso de la Patria, near the Paraná River, where a dam has collapsed because of pressure from rising water levels.

Two people lost their lives in the Corrient province while transporting livestock from one island to another in an effort to save their animals from floods.

Authorities have warned that the rainfall envisioned in the upper parts of the Paraná and Uruguay rivers basins could cause further water level growth over the next week.
