UK overseers urged to fight the content of social media suicides after the death of a 14-year-old girl

The death of a 14-year-old student after TikTok published suicide content has prompted repeated calls to the U.K. overseer bodies to take drastic measures on social networking facilities.

Adriana Retyte, a student at Langley School in Norfolk, took her life after without videos and images linked to the suicide on the video sharing platform, according to a legal doctor who last week discovered that her approach to the material at TickTok possibly played an important role in her decision to end her life.

An investigation heard that the teen’s death had a devastating effect on those close to it and that her equipment revealed that she had seen a number of videos and images related to TikTok suicide in the week prior to her death.

It seems that Adriana’s approach to this material may have played an important role in her decision to end her life that evening, said Norfolk’s legal doctor, Johanna Thompson, The Guardian.

Asked to answer, TikTok said she has shown her deepest condolences with her family at this very difficult time. He said he implements strict rules against any content that promotes self-defence and uses advanced technologies to detect and actively remove the content that violates its community’s guidelines. Understandably, he had not yet investigated what happened with the Rite account, the signal broadcast.

The case came after Melanie Dawes, executive director of regulator Ofcom, told MPs: We don’t see a security culture from these big social media companies… they’re too slow to accept the risks of criminal acts, child abuse and also some of these issues of how algorithms feed material for suicide and self-insult. She added that she just doesn’t believe they can clean up their services.

The doctor added that there was no way to know why Rite acted that way, but said it was clear that she may have been influenced by the negative effects of online content viewing. She is working on a report on preventing future deaths that would be distributed to organs, including Ocom, which in June launched a separate investigation if TikTok was failing to meet his legal obligations to protect children from harmful content.

Ratte’s death came nine years after another 14-year-old, Molly Russell, took his life after being passed on for suicide and self-insulting in social media, including Instagram. A charitable organization founded on its behalf, which campaigns for safer social media, called the death of Rite Destructive. Molly Rose Foundation ( The MRF is now urging Ocom to launch an investigation into TikTok’s algorithm, accusing the regulator of appear to be unwilling or unable to act on this deadly damage.

Andy Burrows, executive director of the MRF, said: Three-quarters of teenagers who still see high risk content for suicide, self-insulting and depression saw it in TikTok. The case for action is clear, it just takes the will to deal with great technology. Ocom must now open an investigation into the TikTok algorithm that is promoting harmful content without delay. Anything less is a disregard for a regulator’s duty. )

A 2026 summer poll by the MRF with 1,825 children from 21 schools in the United Kingdom found that one in three were exposed to high-risk suicide content, self-inflicted, depression or eating disorders on major social media platforms in the week before they were surveyed. It also found that 7% had seen content that made suicides appear normal, attractive, or interesting.

Concerns about Retyte’s welfare arose for the first time on December 31, 2025, when a monitoring system on its school tablet announced the staff’s research related to a death method broadcast the signal. This was followed by the student and her mother, after which the use of the tablet was turned into normal housework. Redte denied doing the research, Caroline Pain, marketing director, communication and school admissions told the investigation.

Some minor problems followed with the delay and violations of the uniform. Rita was in school on May 8 when she was in school and played soccer. He was said to be acting normally at home. But that evening she was found by her mother and stepfather after trying to take her life. She died two days later after attempts to revive her and air transport to the Addenbrooke hospital in Cambridge.
