Macron accuses leftist extremists of riots in France, warns harsh measures

France’s President Emmanuel Macron has accused extreme leftist groups of organising recent riots in several cities in the country, warning stricter security of upcoming protests.

After a meeting of the Council of Security and Defence at the Elisee Palace, Macron declared that some of the attacks and violent acts were planned and posed a serious threat to public order and institutions of the French Republic.

He announced that authorities are considering the possibility of preventing protests that are not organised by recognised unions or structures. Also, the government is planning to create special routes for authorised marches, aimed at protecting businesses, shops and public property.

Macron warned that investigations into the incidents would continue and that persons involved in the violence would face justice. According to him, thousands of people have been detained by police, while hundreds of others have been imprisoned after recent clashes.

Meanwhile, French authorities are preparing for new protests warned for the weekend. In the town of Lyon, local authorities have halted all demonstrations scheduled for Saturday, following last week’s violent incidents. Similar measures have been made in some areas of Paris and other cities.

During the riots in Lyons, looting, burning objects and clashes with police were reported. The mayor described the situation as several hours of chaos.

Despite security measures, the French government has indicated it will continue dialogue with unions, political parties, student organisations and employers’ representatives to address social, economic and educational concerns, especially those affecting young people.

On the other hand, protest organisers, including the movement of Yellow Jeles and several unions, have called for new mobilizations at the national level and for a general strike in early November.
